Red Poppies: Flowers of Remembrance

Since World War I, red poppies have been the enduring symbol of remembrance for those lost in war. How did this come to be? A movement led by two women, one American and one French, along with veterans groups around the world commemorated Armistice Day, Nov. 11, 1918, and later Veterans Day, with red poppies. American Legion red poppy is an heirloom variety that first began showing up in American seed catalogs in the 1920s.
